The Situation: The Fear of Missing Out
With U.S. stocks hitting record highs again and excitement around technology taking center stage again, it is understandable that many investors are tempted to join in the rally for the “fear of missing out,” widely known as “FOMO.” While we continue to remain positive on the market, we recommend investors take a pause to acknowledge that the U.S. equity market is being heavily influenced by a small number of stocks. Should this group take an unexpected tumble, the entire stock market could become vulnerable. Said another way, FOMO is not a durable investment strategy.
